Why Ballerinas Have So Much Bad Blood With Kendall Jenner

“The whole thing reads as pretty disrespectful to the artists who devote their lives to this demanding craft.” Dance Spirit Magazine

When a highly successful and wealthy model from an already famous family goes prancing about and carrying on like a child through a ballet studio wearing haute couture tutus, leg-warmers and iconic dance inspired clothes people tend to get their back up. To many, her behaviour in the video was portrayed more as a mocking jest than art. Jenner, who quite obviously has no dance training, was seen by many, appeared to be flaunting her success, disrespecting dance, all the while complaining she didn’t have much of a childhood. Behold the recent shoot for Vogue España.

“I had to grow up pretty fast, I love being a kid — to run around like a child just not caring. I’ve always been adventurous, so I love doing stuff like that — I don’t know, just stupid stuff. I love walking around; being able to be free.” Kendall Jenner

Though the intention of the video was to inspire a sense of “little-girl fantasy on ballerina-ness” it seemed to have quite the opposite effect. Her carrying on doing “stupid stuff” in the ballet room has launched a series of Twitter outcries condemning the video and her behaviour.

According to a recent Forbes report, Kendall Jenner is one of the top four models in the entire world, making upwards of $10 million thanks to her rapidly booming modelling career. Working with popular brands like Estée Lauder, Calvin Klein, Mango, Penshoppe, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, and Topshop, as well as being on the cover of Vogue magazine’s infamous September issue, it is safe to say that there aren’t many places you can go and not see a picture of Ms. Jenner.

And though some people in the artistic community revere her, many dancers found her latest stint wildly offensive and an insult to the highly demanding craft that they have devoted their lives to. With such narrow windows of opportunity to strike it big in the performing arts world, young ladies much like Jenner make immense sacrifices to pursue their passion and try to reach their dreams.

Twitter has exploded with comments such as “The smug moment when a supermodel puts on a pair of pointè shoes and it’s horrific… Step aside, I got this. #KendallJenner”, “Ha Kendall Jenner sweetheart you disgracing the name of ballet stick to reality tv #vogue #KendallJenner”. “Am cringing so badly at the Vogue video of Kendall Jenner in ballet wear and shoes JUST A BIG FAT NO”…

“I don’t make it a habit of commenting on all the dancers that post pics with incorrect technique. I would never get anything else done! But I cannot be a fan of this shoot. There are so many amazing dancers in the world… Kendall Kenner is not one of them! Shame on Momager, Kris Jenner!!! She never made these kids take dance class. She better get North West to the @aldcstudiola before it’s too late!”-  Abby Lee Miller

The Kardashian-Jenner family is no stranger to controversy. With their reality TV show, modelling gigs, and endorsements coming out the wazoo, it is safe to say that the Kimye, Kendall, Kylie, Kourtney, Khloé, and their infamous momager – Kris aren’t shy of any attention or controversy for that matter.

What do you think? Is it beautiful? Is it art? Is it an insult to the craft of dance and its hard working ballerinas?
